Answering Questions: Why I Support Non-DRM Music

Hello everyone. I have received some questions about the Valentine’s give-away albums. People are asking what sort of DRM is one them. All CD Baby tracks are HQ, non-DRM MP3 files. They will play in any MP3 player (iTunes, WinAmp, WMPlayer, RealPlayer, etc.) and can be put on any external media (iPhone, Zune, Android device, CD, DVD).

I respect you all enough to treat you like adults and I believe in fair use. I also believe in copyright and retain all commercial and distribution rights to my music. I believe copyright is a good and neccessary protection for artists – artists deserve to be able to live comfortably through their craft. But I also think using copyright proactively to trap listeners into a commerce cycle (you buy off iTunes and it is quite hard indeed to put the music onto an Android, for most people) is wrong.

I think the RIAA’s paranoid stance that assumes all consumers are pirates is insulting to the people who make the music industry what it is. You see a pirate? Prosecute them. But don’t impune all your customers as criminals.

That’s why I support CD Baby and non-DRM music. I trust you all enough to be good people and not abuse the freedom given to you by the fair use doctrine….and as always, thank you for your support.

Hope you enjoy the music!
